Modern Public Opinion
Each country has a different opinion about the death penalty. What influences their opinion is also the crime that has been committed. Many countries oppose the death penalty but some countries like China, India, and South Africa have a population where the majority supports the death penalty. China has decreased its use of the death penalty by 400% in the past 15 years. Some countries who use the death penalty have come to use a more humane way of execution with the lethal injection. Countries have moved from hanging, long drop hanging, drawing and quartering, the electric chair, and the gas chamber.
Abolition of Capital Punishment
Countries have abolished capital punishment through law or practice in today's world. It's been abolished in 103 countries, 6 use it for certain crimes, and 50 haven't used it for 10+ years. Canada got rid of it in 1976, Roman Republic in 1849, Venezuela in 1854, United Kingdom in 1969 for murder, and the United States use the death penalty for certain crimes.
